Hujambo AGU!

As part of its ongoing internationalisation efforts, the Abdullah Gül University has decided to expand the list of international education fairs it participates in by attending this year’s International Student Fairs Africa (ISFA) in Tanzania and Kenya, East Africa. It was the opportunity to explore a new continent, new potential market and to meet a new wave of prospect AGU students!

This Africa trip included Fairs in hotel conference halls in Arusha (Tanzania) and Nairobi (Kenya), as well as a visit to the Aga Khan Academy, a renowned boarding school in Mombasa (Kenya).

Our International Office representative, Yakup, who was travelling to Africa for the first time, was impressed by the warm welcoming he received. He also felt that the Tanzanian and Kenyan fair attendees were very interested and asked many detailed questions about their potential future university. The subject that came up most frequently were the dorms, social life on campus, academic requirements for application, as well as the food and the weather; the latter possibly being the most popular question! It is true that for some of these students, Kayseri’s cold, snowy winters may come as a surprise, knowing that temperatures in Nairobi and Mombasa rarely fall below 10°C! But these cool winter temperatures in our city also allow us to admire the view of a beautiful snow-capped mountain all throughout the winter months and Erciyes Ski Centre is a good place to discover skiing for the first time 😉

While our future African students will have the opportunity to discover the Erciyes mountain, as well as the unique landscapes of Cappadocia, ISFA exhibitors were offered the once in a lifetime chance to visit the Nairobi National Park, in the city’s centre, where they were able to admire many animals, including, giraffes, lions, crocodiles, monkeys and many more; up close.

During the four days spent in Tanzania and Kenya, Yakup meet many very interested youngsters; mostly A-Level students whose English level was, of course, very high. The best Nairobian school also came to attend the fair and its students were offered a special presentation session with all universities present.

In total, around 70% of attendees who came to the AGU table were motivated to apply right away. They were also particularly interested because AGU was the only Turkish State University to participate in the fair. They also will have the possibility to contact our current Tanzanian and Kenyan AGU students directly in order to get a better insight of what life at AGU and in Kayseri is like for African students.

This Africa trip will certainly have a big impact on already soaring application rates and play a great impact on our students’ intercultural experiences on campus!

  1. Though I was not present in 2015 while you had the education fair in Nairobi, I applied for this year’s Fall intake and I’m positive that I will join the institution in September. I’m really eager to experience life in Turkey and start a new journey in my education.
